Edwards Mansion making every occasion memorable

The magnificent Edwards mansion was built on Cajon St in Redlands, California in 1890. Ready-made plans were purchased by Mr. James S. Edwards, pioneer citizen and citrus grower, to build the fourteen room house. It took over one year to build the original salmon pink structure.

This prominent landmark on the Redlands landscape for many years was situated on a slight rise of ground from which one could see in all directions over the twenty acres of young orange trees surrounding it. The house was not at first used as a family home but was a boarding house for several years.

At a later date, J. S. Edwards and his family took up residence in the great Victorian relic. It was occupied by the Edwards family from that time on until the death of Mrs. Edwards in 1958. In 1967, Plymouth Village acquired the house and used it for office headquarters for six years. In 1973, the developers of the Edwards Mansion complex viewed the house as a classic exhibit of Victorian architecture and felt that it should be restored. The Mansion was purchased for the sum of one dollar, cut into two sections, moved five miles through Redlands and relocated on the site of the old Barton Ranch, one of the most fertile and
picturesque of all the old California estates.

Adjacent to the mansion stands the Orange Tree Wedding Chapel. The stained glass windows and pews incorporated into this structure were once part of the first Evangelical Lutheran Church built in Redlands on Olive Avenue in 1904. The chapel holds one hundred and ten guests and 140 with some standing. The Greenhouse and heated Orangery patio, Tea Garden and Pavilions are used extensively for wedding receptions and banquets.

This development is offered as a tribute to J. S. Edwards and the pioneer citizens and citrus growers whose courage and vision have left with us today a rich heritage of culture and industry.

While weddings and receptions are their showcase, they also host many other types of events including: quinceaneras, proms, business functions, and banquets. Discover how Edwards Mansion can make your special occasion truly memorable.

Chamber offers Cruisin’ Cuisine … a taste of Redlands’ fare

The Chamber is offering a fun filled tasty way to treat yourself and your friends to the savory delights of Redlands without tracking down a truck or needing a smart phone app. October 8th more than a dozen restaurants will offer gastronomic experiences to guests as they stroll from one establishment to another in downtown sampling specialties, delighting in sophisticated tastes and nibbling signature dishes.

Guests will purchase a ticket that will include a map and passport to each participating restaurant. Then off they go to taste and test to hearts delight. At each restaurant they will have the host sign their passport that will then make them eligible for a drawing at the end of the evening. The grand prize is a 42” flat screen TV. For restaurants not located in downtown Redlands host businesses will partner with them allowing use of facility providing both with great exposure.

“We thought this would be a great avenue to promote not only our restaurants but also our downtown businesses.” said Paul Barich, Chamber President Elect, and event organizer. “We encouraged the downtown businesses to stay open during the event and asked a number to host restaurants that are housed outside the immediate downtown area. We want to drive people to downtown and showcase our unique restaurants. There is no place better in the Inland Empire to spend an evening out than Redlands”

Tickets for the event are $35 per person and are limited. To purchase your tickets or for more information about Redlands Chamber Cruisin’ Cuisine call 793-2546.

Chamber to plan strategy for coming year

Each year the Chamber’s Board of Directors takes time out of their busy schedules to focus on the Chamber mission, its members and the plan for the coming years. With President Elect Paul Barich leading the charge the Strategic Planning Conference has been calendared for September 14th when directors will gather at the Chamber office to determine what is in store for the organization and the business community at large both in the immediate future and long term.

“The challenges are monumental.” said Barich. “Our economy is still in disarray. Protecting our businesses, insuring their success and ability to do business in Redlands is our number one priority. Increasing our customer base, adding jobs to the pool, and addressing anti business issues locally, at the State and even on a federal level are in our scope. Providing real benefit to membership is essential to the Chamber and making sure every member has a voice is critical to the leadership.”

The Directors will bring their expertise to the table to develop a working plan of action for the upcoming year taking into consideration 2012 is an election year, a year with the threat of yet another economic turn looming and a City Budget that will again threaten scant services, and reduced revenue.

Chamber works with Economic Development sub committee

The Chamber staff again met with the City’s Economic Development sub committee comprised of Mayor Pete Aguilar, Mayor Pro Tem, Paul Foster, Development Services Director, Oscar Orci, and City Manager Enrique Martinez to review current project status and discuss the City of Redlands retail leakage analysis.

Through discussion a number of market areas were identified as critical missing components in the retail sector in the area and should be considered targets for recruitment. A list of those opportunities was developed and a strategy determined to examine the requirements and the ability to meet the needs. A timeline and accountability to contact the most desirable on the list was assigned to Orci. Reporting on results will take place in September.

The 2011/12 City budget has allocated funds for Orci to hire an Economic Development Manager but until that position has been filled Orci and his department will continue press forward to fill the voids.
