OCT 2017 – President’s article by Todd Underwood

Just a few updates as we head into fall. I would like to welcome new Directors to the Chamber Board:  Mark Orr, from Teamsters Local 1932, John Mills from The RedlandsMill, and returning for another term, Mike Hokana, from Office Solutions.  They will begin their term in January 2018.  President Elect Scott Welsh will be announcing the officers by year’s end.

The second annual Dog Jog is just a month away. We’re expecting hundreds of dogs and their two-legged pals again this year.  Special thanks to our sponsors, Alta Vista Credit Union, All Four Paws Professional Pet Care, Barich & Associates, SCE, Redlands Sewing Center, Allstate Insurance-Todd Underwood. Pacific Specialty Ins. Co, Super 8 Motel, Storage West and JAM Sportswear.  Sponsorship opportunities are still available.

I’m happy to announce that, for the first time, Redlands will have a New Year’s Eve “Orange Drop.” The Chamber and the City have been working closely on this event.  The boom truck, that will be dropping the orange, will be surrounded by a “Logo Wall”, which means 40 feet of advertising space for your business.  Call the Chamber for more details and to get in on this great advertising opportunity!

I hope you’ve all had a great summer. Remember Rise and Shine is back in session.  Hope to see you all at the next gathering of this outstanding program October 6th, University of Redlands, Casa Loma Room, reservations are necessary.

A special thanks goes out to the Elks Club for hosting the most recent Business to Business program and to Miguel Jr.’s for providing lunch for all our attendees. It was an outstanding meeting and an incredible lunch.

OCT 2017 – Five things employees think they are entitled to….

By: Ellen Savage J.D. HR Advisor, CalChamber Labor Law

Employees often employees believe that they are legally entitled to certain benefits or rights at work, but in reality no such law exists.

Cell Phone: Have you noticed employees are suddenly sending a great deal of work time sending text messages or accessing social media websites on their cell phones?

Employers may prohibit employees from bringing cell phones to work entirely or may prohibit any use during working times. Employers may not prohibit cell phone use before or after work or during meal times.

Smoke Breaks: Smokers may think they have a right to more or longer breaks but that is not the case. Employees are entitled to a certain number of 10-minute paid breaks based on the number of hours worked, but during those breaks they may be required to remain on the employer’s premises.

Since smoking indoors in the workplace is generally prohibited and an employer may ban smoking anywhere on the property employees may be limited to smoking only during their meal breaks and only off the property.

Bereavement Leave: What do you do when your receptionist tells you her husband’s great-uncle passed away and she needs to take three day of bereavement leave to go to the out-of-town funeral? No federal or state law gives employees a right to any bereavement leave in any situation, no matter how close a relative has passed away. Most employers do choose to give bereavement leave but each employer may determine what degree of family relation is required to use such leave.

In California if an employer offers bereavement leave for the death of a spouse, the employers must also offer bereavement leave for the death of a registered domestic partner. Both state and federal laws would also require equal treatment for a same-sex spouse.

Choice of Vacation Days: Your busiest month of the year is coming up and an employee tells you he’ll be taking a two-week vacation right in the middle of the that month.

Although the employee may have accrued plenty of vacation time in his vacation bank, he has no legal right to demand to take vacation at any particular time. As an employer you may approve or deny vacation requests based on legitimate business needs.

Be careful not to deny certain vacation request, such as telling a woman who has recently returned from pregnancy disability leave that can’t take a vacation because she already took too much time away from work. That denial may be seen as illegal retaliation on your part and result in a law suit.

Paid Family Leave: One of your employees announces that he needs to take his six weeks of “paid family leave” when his baby is born next month.

The Paid Family Leave program is not a leave program. It is simply a wage replacement program that the state of California requires employees to fund through mandatory payroll deduction.

Paid Family Leave provides wage replacement when an employee takes a leave for baby bonding or to care for an ill family member but it does not give an employee a right to take protected leave.

Unless an employee has a legal right to baby bonding leave under the California Family Rights Act or the federal Family and Medical Leave Act, an employer is not required to give the employee time off.

OCT 2017 – New Year’s Eve Celebration in downtown Redlands

Local hotels, restaurants and bars offer specials for first ever New Year’s Eve Celebration in downtown Redlands

“As far as we are concerned there is no better place to welcome in the New Year, than in downtown Redlands” said Chamber President Todd Underwood, “For years we have been looking for a way to showcase Redlands hospitality industry and when we learned about the city’s amazing holiday plans we decided this was the year to ring in the New Year in Redlands.”

The Chamber of Commerce and the city of Redlands have joined forces to make the holiday experience one to be remembered. Downtown Redlands will be decked out beginning in November luring shoppers, dinners and revelers to downtown. From spectacular lighted arches announcing your arrival to picturesque State Street, to fairy lighted trees and the sounds of seasonal music radiating throughout there will be much to celebrate in Redlands.

In an impressive way to say good bye to 2017 and welcome 2018 a brilliant 8 foot Orange will be dropped at precisely midnight at the corner of Orange and State Streets. The drop will be followed by a dazzling fireworks display, making 2018 official.

While waiting for the stroke of midnight thousands will enjoy the offerings of local restaurants, bars and special promotions at local hotels. From Orange Drop Martinis to Orange chicken menu specialties Redlands will see in the new start to the New Year in style.

The Speakeasy on State has a VIP party to end all New Year’s Eve events. Tickets will include private parking and a reserved Orange Drop Viewing area, Hor’s d’oeuvres to dinner and dancing along with an all-night bar and Champagne Toast at midnight. Tickets are available on EventBrite.com.

Outside a DJ and MCs will keep the crowds entertained until the official count down. The festivities will begin at 6:00 PM. OCT 2017 – Furry Frenzy Over Redlands Dog Jog 2017

By, Charley

The Redlands Chamber is once again hosting a 5K Dog Jog and it’s about time we four legged fur friends got the attention we deserve. How many of us run every day with our human pals, getting them ready for local races, marathons or just to keep them in shape and what do we get for our efforts?…. A bowl of water and if we are lucky a treat.

Last year the Dog Jog was a huge success hundreds of my friends came out to run, (walk, stroll, and some wagon riders) a 5K course in an event just for us! Bravo!

All shapes and sizes showed up and we had such a good time we are doing it again. Saturday, November 4th, at 8:00 AM starting in Sylvan Park.

We actually start in the park then make our way through the University campus heading east then a couple of miles later we circle back to the park where we get our official 2017 Redlands Dog Jog Tag. We also get our own bandana with the logo on it… just like the T-shirts our human buddies will get.

The event is sponsored by Alta Vista Credit Union, Barich & Associates, All Four Paws Pet Care, SCE, Allstate Ins., Pacific Specialties Ins., Storage West, and Office Solutions. Tell your peeps to use these businesses for services, they are the best!

So here’s the deal!!! For Redlands Chamber members, you can sign up at the Chamber office and find out how to get your huge discount!! Call the Chamber office and tell them Charley sent you. 793-2546! If you raced last year let the girls at the Chamber know and they’ll give you a discount.

Just like last year a portion of the proceeds will go to the Redlands Animal Shelter so they can continue to help all my friends who are looking for a home.

You can call the Chamber office at 909 793-2546 if you need more information.

This week’s training tip…. Rest up!

Keep watching for training tips and pics….see you on the 4th.
