This election year will see a dramatic change in the way Redlands residents vote for city council members.  In 2001, The Voters Rights Act paved the way for cities to be at risk for lawsuits concerning the At-Large voting format.  The city of Redlands decided to adopt the District system in early 2017 to avoid unnecessary liabilities.

The citizens and council reviewed a number of maps to reflect a cross section of the city for each of five districts based on geographic and socio-economic demographics. An ordinance was adopted in April of last year.

What does this mean for your business?  Depending on the district your business is located in, it could have an effect on your representation.  Districts 1,3, and 5 are up for election, and one At-Large candidate will be chosen to fulfill the late councilmember Pat Gilbreath’s seat.  All council members will have an impact on all issues, but Districts 1 and 3 have the most business addresses represented on the November 6 ballot.  Districts 2 and 4 will be part of the 2020 election cycle.

The Chamber recently conducted an interview process inviting all 14 candidate invited to participate. All but two attended interviews.  Board Members and Government Review Committee members made up of panelist.

Here is what the inquiring minds at the Chamber wanted to know from every candidate:

  1. What is the greatest issue facing Redlands over the next four years?
  2. How would you support business development and expansion?
  3. What has been Redlands’ biggest success in the past four years?
  4. What has been Redlands biggest failure in the past four years?

The remainder of the interviews included questions from panelists to candidates providing an opportunity to learn more about them and their plans should they be elected. The interviews were thought provoking and revealing.  It has been said that running for elected office doesn’t as much build character as it reveals character.  This was true of all the interviews we conducted.

We also learned that Redlands has many citizens who are willing to work hard to make Redlands a great place to do business our hats are off to all the candidates.  In the end, our panelists vetted, our Chamber Board of Directors voted, and chose the best candidates from each District and At-Large. At the conclusion of the process the Chamber endorsed, Toni Momberger, At Large, Denise Davis, District 1, Paul Barich, District 3, and Paul Foster, District 5.

While we highly recommend you make up your own mind we invite you to “Meet the Candidates” an event presented by the Chamber, on Wednesday, October 17 at City Hall Council Chamber. The program will be televised live. Each candidate will have 5 minutes to share their platform and vision for the city, then a 2 minute closing statement.  Following the program, you can mingle and ask the candidates your own questions.

OCT 2018 – Redlands Chamber hosts live televised Meet the Candidates event

The Redlands Chamber of Commerce will present a live televised “Meet the City Council Candidates” event, Wednesday, October 17th, 6:30 PM, at the Council Chambers, 35 Cajon Street.

All fourteen council candidates have been invited to address not only the live audience but home viewers, giving them an opportunity to explain their platforms.

The Chamber’s Government Review Committee chairman, Tim Murone, TBM fire and Security will be facilitating the event.

There will be no questions from the floor or the moderator. Candidates are encouraged to remain after the event to answer questions from those attending.

“This is a very important election for the city of Redlands.” Said Tim Murone, The Chamber’s Government Review Committee Chairman. “The Chamber wants voters to be well informed before making such an important decision. Presenting this kind of event reaches a large number of voters. Learning firsthand what each candidate has to offer is paramount in decision making.”

 

OCT 2018 – Time for the Redlands Dog Jog 2018 by Charley

Hey my furry friends it’s time for the Redlands Dog Jog 2018

 The Redlands Chamber is once again hosting a 5K Dog Jog and it’s about time we four legged fur friends got the attention we deserve. Last year the Dog Jog was a huge success hundreds of my friends came out to run, (walk, stroll, and some wagon riders) a 5K course in an event just for us! Bravo!

All shapes and sizes showed up and we had such a good time we are doing it again. Saturday, November 3rd, at 9:00 AM starting in Sylvan Park.

We start in the park then make our way through the University campus heading east then a couple of miles later we circle back to the park where we get our official 2018 Redlands Dog Jog Tag. We also get our own bandana with the logo on it… just like the T-shirts our human buddies will get.

This year my pals have added all kinds of fun to the Dog Jog. First there is going to be a costume contest…. Yep we can all get dressed up in our very finest and be judged in all our glory! Even the mayor will be there for this part of the day.

Then we have experts in Agility training showing us what we can do if we really put our minds to it… and obedience training, demonstrations from therapy dog organizations, canine first aide and even an canine massage booth. It’s going to be such a fun day for all of us.

The event is sponsored by Alta Vista Credit Union, Barich & Associates, SCE, Allstate Ins., Pacific Specialties Ins., Storage West, and Office Solutions. Tell your peeps to use these businesses for services, they are the best!

The tourism industry is important to any community’s economic growth.

SEPT 2018 – Redlands Chamber YPN share coffee and information with the Mayor

On August 15th the YPN held its first “Coffee with Phil in the Blank” meeting at the Ayres Hotel Redlands. The YPN had the privilege of hearing a presentations from Mayor Paul Foster. The event was so informational and educational; Mayor Foster entertained questions from the YPN about the challenges and issues that face their businesses directly. Mayor Foster was candid and honest with his answers and gave feedback on every issue presented to him.

The Mayor gave us an update on the plans for the Packinghouse District, he discussed the potential for a joint-venture parking structure to quell some of the parking issues facing the downtown area, he gave an update of the success of Hillside Cemetery, and discussed the importance of making financially responsible decisions (albeit sometimes not popular decisions) to protect the future of the City, it’s residents and its business partners.

“Coffee with Phil in the Blank” is set to be a bi-monthly meeting in which the YPN Committee members will invite various members of the community to present and provide discussion relevant to the YPN and our age-ranged business professionals.

Stay tuned for the announcement of our next meeting date and presenter. Space is limited and max occupancy for each meeting is 30 guests.
