JUNE 2018 President’s article by Scott Welsh

Be a Business Change Agent

125 years ago, when the Redlands Chamber of Commerce started as the Redlands Board of Trade, we were a radically different economy.  The burgeoning citrus industry brought wealth and opportunity to the area, and our town was at the epicenter.  The local Chamber members in those days were in charge of very important jobs like watering Orange and State, so horse and buggies would not create dust clouds.   Thank goodness for change.

In the ensuing years, we’ve seen enormous change.  Mostly good, some not so good.  We’ve changed from a mostly agro economy, to one that has embraced technology and thrives on our historical heritage.  I love this about Redlands.  We have remained respectful of our heritage while embracing the constant flow of change.  Without it, we would be just another ghost town.

This reminds us to take stock in our own “fruits”, and work on things we can change to help our businesses grow and adapt to a new world order.  Here are a few things to think about when embracing change:

  1. Learn how to Fail. Know anyone in business who has not failed?  Rare.  Successful entrepreneurs are always testing the boundaries of failure.  We have a gold star society that rewards participation.  Business is not so forgiving.  Failure can be good for you, but it requires risk. What happens when you don’t get what you want?  Experience. So, take a chance, try that new product, introduce that new menu item.  Expand your business. Try that new advertising method. Embrace digital.  The biggest failure in business?  Not showing up.
  2. Get out of your own way.  The biggest obstacle in growing your business many times is you.  Embracing change can be a potential blow to your ego. Get over that and approach change in a businesslike manner. If you spend your time dwelling on your failures, you will never be able to grow your win column. If a new direction or initiative is failing, get out, move on, don’t be emotional.  Failure is just a pothole on the road to success.  Embrace failure, and you are already successful.
  3. Baby Steps.  Begin with a plan and evaluate each step.  Take a small action toward your goal.  Break down your goal into small wins/losses.  Many times, small steps can help you adapt to wider change.  Need to embrace the digital world for your business? Begin with simple website, evaluate your customers’ needs/wants. Adapt your message to your customers. How will your website make them “feel”?  What do you want to happen?  Have a plan.
  4. Teach yourself.  What are you doing to develop within your industry? Do you attend trade shows, business networking, or engage in educational opportunities?  Do you come away from those events with actionable items and solid takeaways?  Have you identified the most successful businesses in your industry?  What are you doing to be like them or to beat them?  Successful entrepreneurs are always learning.

JUNE 2018 – Employee VS Independent Contractor

Employee vs. Independent Contractor:  The High Cost of Mis-classification

With its April 30th decision in the Dynamex Operations West case, the California Supreme Court made it more difficult for California businesses to classify their workers as independent contractors.

The Redlands Chamber will host a business seminar, Thursday, June 7th, 7:30 AM at Alta Vista Credit Union, Community Room, presented by Mark Edwards and William Tooke of the Redlands law firm of Mirau Edwards, Cannon, Lewin & Tooke.

In a real-world oriented program, you will learn when you can, and more importantly when you cannot, treat workers as independent contractors.   You will also learn that misclassification can be costly, or even ruinous, to California employers.  Costs can include not only overtime, meal period and rest period wages, but penalties, liability for worker incurred costs, liability for the workers unpaid taxes, and responsibility for medical costs, rehabilitation expenses, and lost earnings if the misclassified worker is injured.

The two presenters, Edwards and Tooke, with a combined experience of more than 60 years practicing law, will help guide you through the complex, and perilous rules governing classification of workers as independent contractors vs. employees.

Reservations are needed, seating is limited, call the chamber office at 793-2546, no cost for chamber members, $25 for non-members.

MAY 2018 – President’s article by Scott Welsh

The great motivator Zig Ziglar penned a quote I’ll always remember: “You are a success when you have made friends with the past, are focused on the present, and are optimistic about your future”.  This time of year is a great time to check in on your business goals.  As business leaders we are often so focused on our daily tasks that we forget to check in on the big picture.  I often ask small business owners “so, how’s business”?  It’s easy to tell the ones who have goals.  They respond with things like “good, better than last year, or “we’re up over same month last year”.  Business will always do two things:  go up or go down. It’s important to take stock in your pacing to goal.  Corporate America is driven by metrics.  They use intricate methods and systems to help them determine important factors like share of business, pacing of their local market, and overall growth of their industry segment.  As small business owners, we don’t always have that information available, but we can set goals and timelines to help us stay on track.  Setting specific and measurable goals can be key to help your growth and track your marketing efforts. There are literally hundreds of approaches available with a little research.  Plan your work, work your plan.

The city of Redlands recently adopted its General Plan – a 20 year plan for everything from land use, housing, and beautification, to continuing a focus on preserving our historical heritage.  Not many of us have a 20 year plan, but an annual, or 3 to 5 year plan is doable!

What does the city plan mean for your business? Why is this important?  Find out by attending the Annual State of the Community Luncheon on June 22, 12:00pm at the Orton Center. The Chamber of Commerce hosts this sold out event each year to highlight where we’ve come from, and where are we going.   Mayor Paul Foster and our city leaders offer an inside look at how we are pacing to goal in recent years, and where we are headed.  The theme:  Keeping the Promise.  I am personally very excited each year to hear about our goals and focus of our community. It’s good to hear from our leadership about planning, implementing, and executing a worthwhile direction.  As the father of three young adults, I think it’s important to know how we are setting up our community for the next generation, and to know how I can position my business for the greatest success.  The program always includes special recognition to our local Heroes – people who stand out in serving our community and Annual Beautification Awards for commercial property improvement.  There is no doubt that if you can attend only one event this year – this is it.  It is a perfect example of the business community, private sector, and your local government coming together to showcase our current state of affairs.

The luncheon is sponsored by a host community focused businesses like The Ayre’s Hotel, Alta Vista Credit Union, Redlands Community Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, Southern California Gas Company,
Welsh Insurance Services, Brixton Capital, Teamsters Local 1932, Redlands Professional Firefighters, and the Redlands Police Officers Association.
Get your tickets ($40 per person) as soon as they become available!  For more information or to make your reservation, checkout redlandschamber.org, or call the Chamber office at 909-793-2546.  They will sell out.

Here’s to achieving all your business goals in 2018.
