Holiday Window Decorating Program Kicks Off Shop Small Saturday

Saturday, November 28th, 2020 is the eleventh annual Shop Small Saturday. Dedicated to supporting the diverse range of local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy, and enhance neighborhoods around the country, Shop Small Saturday was created by American Express in 2010 in response to small business owners’ most pressing need: getting more customers.

Just as last year, the Redlands Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the City of Redlands to champion our local businesses and encourage the community to support the local economy by shopping locally. This year, more than ever in recent years, our businesses need your patronage. Covid-19 continues to impact how we conduct business and personal interactions; however, it doesn’t have to stop all of our traditions and support of our community.

To help kick off the season, The Redlands Chamber of Commerce, Redlands Visitors Center, About Redlands, and the City of Redlands have partnered to encourage downtown businesses with storefront windows to light up the holidays and participate in the Holiday Window Decorating Program.

This family-friendly program is a fun way to celebrate the holiday season, create a festive and beautiful downtown, attract visitors, and showcase our local businesses. To make it even more fun for families, businesses have incorporated snowflakes in their decorations to be counted. Counting slips will be available at the Visitor’s Center for families to pick up. Participants need only go around to the participating businesses and try counting all the snowflakes in the window display and decorations. Slips can be returned to the Visitor’s Center and a participant’s returned slip will be randomly selected to win a prize! (Random winner will be selected and notified on December 29th). One business will also have an orange hiding in the display! All participants who find the window with an orange will be entered into a second opportunity drawing!

Participating businesses include:

Rok N Fondue, Daryl’s Pets and Grooming, Dirtbag Shop, Nichos Ice Cream, Swoon Home, Pacific Premier Bank, Pacific Western Bank, Wells Fargo, Provident Bank, Martha’s Greens, Oscar’s, Frugal Frigate, Hatfield Buick, MacGuyz, Harlo & State, Citrograph, Jacks Toys, Board Game Paradise, Fleur de Lis, Redlands Art Association, Bank of Southern California (formerly CalWest), Laura’s Travel’s, Darrel Olson Insurance Solutions , Joss Collective, Visitors Center

Redlands Chamber of Commerce Endorses Measure T

The Redlands Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has voted unanimously to endorse Measure T. The Measure would impose, commencing April 1, 2021, an additional 1-percent sales tax on each dollar of taxable sales of goods in the City of Redlands, and on the storage, use or consumption in the city of goods purchased from a retailer. Measure T will be on the November 3, 2020 statewide ballot and requires approval of a majority of the City’s voters (i.e., 51%). The sales tax would be deposited into the city’s general fund to be used for general municipal governmental purposes. Although Measure T does not obligate the city to use the proceeds of the sales tax for any particular services, facilities, or programs, the use of the funds would be overseen by an independent citizens’ advisory committee and subject to a financial audit. The city’s Finance Department estimates that the annual revenue to the city generated by the sales tax would be approximately $10.7 million.

The Board’s endorsement came after a month of various meetings with proponents both for and against the measure, as well as review of all documents and arguments relating to the Measure. The Chamber’s Government Review Committee also played an extensive role in researching and evaluating the Measure.

There are several reasons for the Board’s endorsement. First and foremost, the City finds itself facing a $5.6 million deficit after budget cuts of over $10 million. Although the City has a reserve to draw from, it is projected to be exhausted in two to three years without more budget cuts. Without the passage of Measure T, it is the Board’s conclusion that quality of life in Redlands will be negatively affected. Homelessness issues, police protection, and community safety needs would suffer. Further, the current sales tax rate of 7.75 % is relatively low compared to surrounding communities. The 1-percent increase would place the City approximately in the middle of sales tax rates compared to other communities.

This endorsement, however, does come with the expectation that our City leaders will undertake a concerted effort to rein in costs and look for opportunities to generate revenue. There is, in the Board’s opinion, a true need for this Measure. However, we do not want this sales tax increase to disincentivize our leaders from making politically difficult, but necessary choices, such as addressing the costly pensions that burden our City budget. Additionally, we would hope to see a compensation review based on today’s environment, comparative to other same-sized, southern California cities, which will affect tomorrow’s pension issues.
There is never a good time for a tax increase, but the austere measures required without the passage of Measure T would create a loss for all citizens and businesses in Redlands. We endorse Measure T but hope we can also begin to address growing concerns shared by businesses and residents alike.

Bulldog Endeavors: micro-projects to help your business

Bulldog Endeavors: Brief Projects. Big Results.
With many U of R students having job and internship offers withdrawn, and students in need of professional projects to gain experience, the University of Redlands Office of Career & Professional Development (OCPD) has launched a new program, called Bulldog Endeavors.  This is a great opportunity for businesses to gain some additional support on a variety of projects, and for students to gain experience and do something meaningful this summer. The program is partnering university students (and recent 2020 graduates) with alumni and local businesses to work on micro-projects throughout the upcoming months.

Micro-projects are meant to be focused on a single initiative, are short-term, and remote.  Micro-projects do not need to be paid, but can be.  If interested, please fill out this brief form, so that the U of R OCPD may evaluate the proper pairing from available and interested students.
